June 10, 2005 – QuiCare Ltd., a developer of disposable healthcare products that measure, process and transmit vital human data for preventive care and disease state management purposes, unveils Press-O-Sense, the first ever disposable blood pressure monitor, at the Investment In Innovation (In3) Conference, San Francisco.

Addressing a problem affecting one out of every three adults in the US and close to 1 billion people worldwide suffering from elevated BP levels, Press-O-Sense is suitable for people requiring fast and accurate monitoring of blood pressure at any time in non-clinical and clinical settings, similar to monitoring weight, cholesterol or glucose levels. In particular, Press-O-Sense is applicable to individuals seeking to monitor their blood pressure on an irregular basis or in consequence of physician instructions; managed-care preventive screening programs; first aid, mass disaster kits; and clinically-contaminated environments such as EMS vehicles and hospital intensive care units.

The Problem
Blood pressure is the most important predicator of life expectancy. Often referred to as the “silent killer”, at least 42% of individuals with pre-hypertension and hypertension are unaware of the fact that they have a problem until complications occur. Consequently, the early detection and successful control of blood pressure can achieve amazing savings, such as a 20 25% reduction in the incidence of heart attacks, a 35-40% reduction in the incidence of strokes and a more than 50% reduction in the incidence of heart failure. For managed care institutions, insurance companies and health authorities, the impact of these statistics is clear – tremendous savings in resources and a better health service. The accurate screening of potential and actual hypertension subjects requires a series of consecutive blood pressure measurements on different days. To date, the only accurate method for such screening was by inviting people to visit clinic settings a number of times, preferably at the same time of day, for measuring their blood pressure. Apart from accuracy limitations resultant from white-coat syndrome, this method has proved to be inconvenient, time consuming and an enormous drain on medical resources, failing to provide a successful solution for mass screening of populations at risk.

The QuiCare Solution
QuiCare addresses all of these problems with a fully automatic, low-cost disposable blood pressure device which is mailed to target groups. Moving blood pressure testing from the clinic to the comfort of home and eliminating the burden on medical professionals, it enables subjects to independently perform a series of readings by themselves in the comfort of their homes, and then mail the device back. The relevant results (systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, pulse rate, and the time that the reading was made) can then be downloaded and analyzed, enabling the early detection of hypertension and implementation of preventive actions.
